Iceland lava fields, probably my favorite landscape of all. The ancient lava flows span miles and miles and they are covered in this beautiful green moss. It’s a totally surreal scene. There is something very mysterious about it and being there is pretty magical. There must be so much more of this than I actually saw but I found some pretty cool sections to explore.

One of the most amazing things about Iceland is that you can more or less go anywhere you can physically get to. Driving along the southern coast you pass many huge glaciers and if you find the right road you can drive right up to them. I was told this was a really goos spot to see a glacier up close. This is the Solheimajokull. It was pretty cool. I just started walking towards it and before I knew it I was way up on top of it looking back out on the valley I drove up. I even found a beautiful ice cave underneath it. Awesome…..

Totally bizarre landscape. Icebergs from the Vatnajökull (the glacier) break off and flow into Jökulsárlón (the lagoon) and then flow out to the ocean where they are bashed by the waves and deposited onto the beach, which is black volcanic sand. I had a spectacular morning here and was completely alone. This is one of the most popular destinations in Iceland and it was deserted. One of the benefits of traveling in the off season! This is a good opportunity to comment on the fact that Iceland is currently one of the hottest destinations and we are seeing photos of it everywhere (for good reason). I knew going into it that I would be hard pressed to make “original” images. It’s very similar to showing up here in Jackson to shoot the Tetons. It’s been done….. but I hadn’t done it and that’s all that was important. To stand in these places and take it in is simply astonishing. I had a week to photograph and I feel I did a pretty good job with my time. Some of these images are fairly common but I think that I also made some with my own unique approach and I will continue to share them over the next few days.
